STAGES OF PAINTING THE ICON OF CALVARY
London 2009

Stage 5, Part 1: PAINTING STARTS:
Painting the background colours

Painting starts

After a lot of preparatory work, the colours (or artist's dry pigments)
have been mixed
and
prepared.
Each will be applied flat, using egg-yolk medium (and with clearly defined
edges)
and each will
act as a background from which the lights can very gradually be built.
...So, at last painting has started!... and it will take a long time!... are you sitting comfortably?

Background colours have been applied to the figures of Mary and St John

Applying the background colour on the figure of Christ

Applying the background colours on the figure of Christ,
the white garment over His body will be painted over, later

The majority of background colours have now been applied
Now the drawing, painted with fine lines, will need to be reinstated,
so that painting the many graduations of layers of lights in the figures can begin

Close-up of the background colour of the figure of Christ, and the Cross
As in the other figures, the previously incised drawing on gesso can just about to be seen
