1. Search Engines

WORLD WIDE WEB SEARCH ENGINES

"Search engines vary, and each has its strengths...WebCrawler, Yahoo, Alta Vista seem OK. The key to using them is to know something very specific (eg name of artist, subject, gallery, place etc) and get into a site with a lot of links, info about similar sites. There`s also a distinction between 'conventional' artists who use a page like a catalogue and web artists who use the medium as something in itself. The latter, obviously, are more at ease with it, and have better sites" (James Faure Walker)

2. Plugins

PLUG-INS etc. Introduction
The conventional way of displaying at work in the Internet consists on a series of pages connected through a hyperlink. There are however more dynamic and interactive ways of displaying an artists work but to view these you will need to install the necessary plug-ins. These can be downloaded free from the Web (see Plug-ins, in the WWW Resources section of this Library). There is no need to work out which plug-in you will need to view the Web site, since when you connect with it will tell. To give you some examples, and assuming you are using Windows 95 and Netscape Communicator, and that all your directories are on C:\ drive:

The Felicien Rops QTVR Gallery

To view this site you will need Quick Time Virtual Reality (QTVR)
This will need to be installed on C:\Windows\System. After QTVR has been installed in this directory, click on its qt32.exe, doing this will send the plugin connection to your Netscape Programe Plugin files.
This is an exhibition od drawings in a virtual reality art gallery. You can move around, get close or move away from the works using the mouse and shift and control keys. This site was designed by Chris Hutchison, Kigston University, using QTVR Panorama 1.ob4 (see Colleges & Universities section of this Library).

So which plugings do I need, and which ones do I already have?
The above mentioned Shockwave and QTVR are the most commonly used, but if you want to do a test and find out which ones you may already have and decide on which ones you may wish to have see Chris Hutchinson's useful chart at Kingston University:
