Guillem Ramos-Poquí "A Labyrinth of Mirrors" - A Selection of Paintings 1991-2002 The theme of these paintings is the role of images as communicative signs. Through the poetic interplay of abstract and figurative, and visual and verbal elements, these works reveal that comprehending the world around us requires a hermeneutic act of imagination - the world is thus a construction of patterns. 1991 marked a new direction in Ramos-Poquí's work, away from earlier romantic and lyrical themes of the 80's, to issues of modernity and contemporary culture - issues of communication and the tension between nature and the city. In contrast to his digital photomontages these paintings seek to play with the fluidity of form and space in ways that go beyond mere photographic or literal representation, exploring themes that are present in both the digital works and the assemblages of 1998-99. The idea of "A Labyrinth of Mirrors" refers back to the hermeneutic approach in art theory and philosophy, which sees the problem of perception and interpretation as a circular hall of mirrors. The barriers that our culture has erected between the visual and the verbal are here dissolved and transgressed through art acting as a connecting force for constructing a new social and cultural order.
